START ON ANTITRUST INQUIRY ON COOP

The Antitrust Authority has started two pending against Coop Estense and Unicoop Tirreno, in order to verify if the "suspects" put forward by Esselunga are reasonable, ie whether a co-operative red "has or has not abused its dominant position in the markets of the provinces of Modena and Livorno . The abuse was the result of a pact with the local authorities in Emilia Romagna and Tuscany to "prevent the expansion of the territory Esselunga competitor." According to the Antitrust Authority, in fact, the lack of input Esselunga market could have caused significant "harm to consumers, both in terms of cost and availability of goods.

Last year, Esselunga denounced the tacit agreement between the Municipality and Coop Estense of Modena, in order to prevent Esselunga to hinder the achievement of the space needed to build a supermarket on a site purchased ten years earlier, the group founded by entrepreneur Bernard Caprotti. About a year after Coop Estense bought a lot adjacent to the supermarkets. Now the Municipality of Modena treated with stakeholders in an attempt to reach an agreement able to avoid the creation of two malls so close together. After finding it impossible to reach an agreement, the public body changed the intended use of the lots from commercial to residential.

In Livorno, however, Unicoop would convince the owners of a ground to reject the offer of two supermarkets. The lot, incidentally, was subsequently acquired by Unicoop, despite economic status had tendered approximately ten million euro, compared to that of a direct competitor. Thanks to a Tuscan countryside entrusted to the local press, Esselunga argued that in areas "where there is not one of his supermarket, the Coop their prices higher, causing damage to consumers, due to the lack of competition. For its part, has always denied any wrongdoing Unicoop.
